Gratitude is a powerful tool for accomplishment. Elizabeth thanks Darcy for his help with saving Lydia, and that invites a welcome proposal from him. Darcy too is grateful to Elizabeth for making him a better man. Loyalty and indebtedness are related to gratitude. Receiving help hurts the ego, which leads to the recipient of the help hurting the helper. Wickham feels resentment towards Darcy for being in a position to receive help. He tries to hurt Darcy and his family. Bingley offers to introduce Darcy to Elizabeth, Darcy resents this offer, and later separates Bingley from Jane.
