Supramental Being and the Human Being

October 8,2001

  • The main characteristic of the human being is the human body. That it has a developed vital and is guided by the mind is secondary.
  • The vital and mind subserve the goal of protecting the survival of the body.
  • At all moments of crisis, we witness this fact.
  • The human being often rises to great vital energy and mental light.
  • That mental light is there to guide his vital for the purpose of preserving the body.
  • It is certainly not his mind that rules his existence on earth, not even his vital, but the exigencies of his own physical existence.
  • Sri Aurobindo speaks of the psychic being evolving in man. He sees it doing so in man's mind and later traveling in both directions releasing the vital psychic and the psychic of the substance of the body, when we know him to be a supramental being.
  • An earlier stage is his being a vital psychic being.
  • The first stage is the life of the psychic being in the mind.
  • The psychic emerging in the mind as its ruling the being is the third stage of a journey of which the first stage is his own mind (surface mind) ruling and the second stage is the Purusha ruling his life and body.
  • A man who is ruled by his mind is supposed to be a rational man all around.
  • The world has witnessed the phenomena of man reaching the Absolute, touching all planes above and even sinking to the level of the animal and the brute. Whether the existence or emergence of the RATIONAL MAN has ever been recorded is not known.
  • We do find men of very high mental intellectual achievements ruled by their vital and mind alternately.
  • Such an advent of rational man can be followed by the birth of a psychic mental man and later a vital psychic man.
  • We would consider someone a rational man, if he understood the world around him rationally. When the acid test of his being rational in his own emotional life arises, we expect him to pass that test.
  • Should there be such a man, we expect him to know the rational solutions to the world's problems whether they are practicable or not.
  • He should surely be not ruled by his vital.
  • For the psychic (mental) man to emerge in the world, the very first condition is the collective must conceive of itself as one world.
  • Sri Aurobindo came on the scene at the turn of the 20th century when such ideas were tossed about by the elite thinkers.
  • From that beginning, He traveled all the way to become supramental in His physical body.
  • Now that that happened and He expected that the world could be supramentalised during His lifetime, the essential physical basis for other levels of being was created by Him.
  • The first step was to provide security by abolishing the world wars, which He personally accomplished.
  • Auroville, founded by Mother, preserves that Peace.
  • For the mental psychic man to emerge, the physical of the man must enjoy a total security from the attacks of the hostile forces of the subtle world and the evil forces of mankind.
  • To achieve that end, an abundant vital prosperity and a clear rational world leadership are of great necessity.
  • Such a world leadership must know in a rational manner what has happened to the world so far and be able to rationally project its thinking into some distance of the future.
  • Thus, the eradication of local conflicts, armaments, and terrorism assumes significance. Rational ideas of prosperity are very much in place in such a scheme.
  • One who espouses this mentally and works for its realisation in life has every possibility of finding his mental psychic being.
  • Mentally such a knowledge will be a theory while vitally that knowledge can be said to be the theory of Life Response.
  • Such a person can approach this goal in several ways, of which the mental part alone can be considered.

- A comprehensive theoretical assessment of the post war life of conflicts, arms race, terrorism, etc. which turns out to be valid on examination of recorded facts, existing statistics and to answer effectively the opinions so far given out by thinkers.

- A valid historically true theory of the development of the last hundred or at least fifty years which on any showing will grow in its validity.

- A justification of the conditions on earth in terms of global events, global organisation and global problems.

- A practical SOLUTION for a few of the leading problems of the world which will stand any rational scrutiny.

- An idea to strengthen this base and extend it all over the world.

- If, in his view, other views are erroneous, a theoretical explanation of how such a view has been made at all possible.

  • Two of His five ideals were fulfilled during His lifetime and the above attempt can be to further His third goal of world unity.
