Character of Life Discussion in P&P: Generosity

Date:
September 3, 2022
Speaker(s):
Mr. Garry Jacobs
Notes:

Generosity can be in giving or sharing something one possesses, it can also be in words, thoughts and acts. Every aspect has its absolute value. The relative value, or where one currently is and how far one progresses also matters. Darcy is a wealthy man, and spends nearly a year's income on Wickham and Lydia. Mr. Gardiner is far lower socially and economically than Darcy, but he is willing to take on the expenses. He does not spend the money, but the willingness itself is generous. A comparison between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet shows the consequence of generosity in words and thoughts. Mr. Bennet appreciates Mr. Gardiner's generosity, Mrs. Bennet dismisses it casually. It is Mr. Bennet who spends a large part of his time with Jane and Elizabeth in their houses, Mrs. Bennet is intimidated by Darcy and stays away.
