How does Sachchidananda work in the world? |
Sachchidananda formed a relation with ego. | |
That was the first formation. | |
At first it was a figure. | |
Finally it was consummated. | |
What was this process? | |
Divine Life for man has a practice. | |
It has a philosophy as well. |
Both depend on their relation. | |
Para No. 2 | |
The physical mind has walls. | |
We must pierce them. |
Our evidence is from the senses. | |
We must exceed them. |
By doing so, we know of the divine. | |
We arrive at a conception. | |
It gives us the knowledge. | |
Both are of the divine existence. | |
We live in the material world. |
We see its phenomena. | |
Ours is a physical consciousness. | |
Our evidence is sense evidence. | |
These tell us of the material world. |
They can give us no more. |
But we have other faculties. | |
They help mind to conceive. | |
Mind deduces by ratiocination. | |
It uses imagination too. |
We see the facts of the physical world. |
Mind understands more from them. |
Physical data do not give it. |
Nor does the physical experience. | |
Man has several such instruments. | |
Reason comes first. |
It is called pure reason. | |
Page Nos. 60 & 61 Para No. 3
Human reason has a double action. | |
It can be mixed or dependent. | |
It can also be pure and sovereign. | |
Reason sometimes confines itself. | |
It limits itself to sensible experience. | |
Then, it admits law as final. | |
Law studies only phenomenon. | |
Phenomenon is the appearance of things. | |
Appearance is in relations. | |
Processes and utilities also give appearances. | |
This is rational action. | |
It is incapable of knowing anything. | |
It knows the appearances. | |
The truth is in the depths of being. |
Reason cannot fathom it. |
Reason surveys becoming. | |
Reason can also assert. | |
Its pure action does so. |
It accepts our sensible experience. | |
But it is not final for the reason. | |
It is only a starting point. | |
Reason goes behind the experiences. | |
It refuses to limit itself by them. |
It works in its own right. |
Behind the appearances are concepts. | |
They are unalterable. | |
They do not attach to the appearances. | |
These concepts are general. | |
Reason strives to reach them. |
It judges by them. |
Reason passes from the appearance behind. | |
Thus it may arrive at its result. | |
It will be a direct judgement. | |
This may appear to be the result of sense experience. | |
It may also appear to depend on it. |
But it is really a perception of reason. | |
Here it works on its own right. |
There is another more characteristic action of reason. | |
Its perception starts from an experience. | |
It is a mere excuse. | |
Reason may leave it behind. | |
Maybe far behind. | |
And proceed to the result. | |
Our senses give us an experience. | |
They wish to dictate a result. | |
Reason may arrive at an opposite result. | |
This movement is legitimate. | |
It is indispensable. |
Our normal experience is small. | |
It covers a small part of the universal fact. | |
This is a limited field. | |
Our instruments are defective. | |
They give us false weights and measures. | |
They must be exceeded. | |
We must put them away to a distance. | |
Their insistence must be denied. | |
Our conceptions are inadequate. | |
There are more adequate conceptions. | |
They give us the truth of things. | |
We must arrive at it. |
Sense-mind commits errors. | |
Reason must correct them. |
It is a valuable power. | |
Man has developed it. |
He is a superior terrestrial being. |
Reason makes him so. |
Page No. 61 Para No. 4 | |
Senses belong to physical knowledge. | |
Reason is of the metaphysical. | |
Our being is integral. | |
Metaphysics gives us concepts. | |
It does not fully satisfy us. |
Pure reason accepts concepts entirely. | |
It is satisfactory to it. |
Concepts are the stuff of reason. | |
Our nature has two eyes. | |
Things appear as an idea. | |
They also appear as facts. | |
Therefore concepts are incomplete for us. |
They are unreal to a part of us. |
Only experience is complete there. |
Now we have different truths. | |
They are of a different order. | |
They are outside our experience. | |
They cannot be seen by the senses. | |
They can be seen only by the reason. | |
It needs another faculty in us. |
We are dealing with the supraphysical. | |
So, we must extend our psychological experience. | |
Page No. 62 Para No. 5 | |
All our experience is psychological. | |
We receive by our senses. | |
It goes to the sense-mind. | |
Indian philosophy calls it Manas. | |
Sense-mind translates the experience for us. |
Therefore, it is psychological. | |
Manas is the sixth sense. | |
So say our philosophers. | |
We may say it is the only sense. | |
Vision, hearing, smell, touch, taste are other senses. | |
We can say they are specialisations. | |
Manas uses the sense organs. | |
They are the base for its experience. | |
Manas, yet, exceeds the sense organs. | |
It is capable of direct experience. | |
Reason’s understanding is psychological experience. | |
It is mixed or dependent. | |
Or, it is pure or sovereign. | |
It is mixed with outer objects. | |
It is pure with itself. | |
Reason can depend on senses. | |
It can form perceptions by the senses. | |
Or, it can act in itself. | |
It can be aware of things directly. | |
It is a sort of identity with them. |
We are thus aware of our emotions. | |
We are aware of anger. | |
That is, we become anger. | |
We are also aware of our existence. | |
This is knowledge by identity. | |
This is the nature of experience. | |
It has a true character. | |
It is hidden from us. |
By exclusion, we are separate from the world. |
We are our subject. | |
The rest are objects for us. |
Now there is separation. | |
The world is separated from us. |
To know the world we need organs. | |
We have developed those organs. | |
Direct knowledge is no longer possible. | |
So, there can be indirect knowledge. | |
It is caused by physical contact. | |
Mental sympathy also gives that knowledge. | |
This is a limitation. | |
It is caused by ego. | |
Ego always proceeds on this basis. | |
Ego starts from an original falsehood. | |
It covers the true truths. | |
It offers contingent falsehood in its place. | |
We take them to be practical truths. | |
Page Nos. 62 & 63 Para No. 6
This is our nature. | |
It is a nature of mental and sense knowledge. | |
We are presently original thus. |
These are our existing limitations. | |
In it there is no inevitable necessity. | |
This is a part of human evolution. | |
Or, it is a result of it. |
There are certain physiological functionings. | |
They have their reactions. | |
Mind depends on them. |
Mind is accustomed to them. |
Around us is the normal universe. | |
It is the material universe. | |
Mind, thus, relates to it. |
We have to be aware of the external world. |
It is the rule. | |
We have to do so indirectly. | |
It must be through sense-organs. | |
Sense can convey only a limited truth. | |
We can experience only that much. |
Yet, it is only a rule. | |
The rule is after all a habit. | |
Maybe it is the regularity of a habit. | |
Mind can know directly. | |
It can know the objects itself. | |
It needs no aid of the sense organs. | |
It would be natural for the mind. | |
Thus, it is liberated. | |
It is liberated from the domination of matter. | |
Hypnosis does so. |
Other psychological phenomena also act so. |
Life evolves. | |
Life works out a balance between mind and matter. | |
This working has a balance. | |
This balance limits the waking consciousness. | |
It also determines it. |
Direct knowledge is impossible for mind. | |
It is impossible during its waking hours. | |
Therefore the waking mind must go to sleep. | |
That sleep liberates the true mind. | |
The true mind is the subliminal mind. | |
Then mind is free. | |
A free mind can assert. | |
Assertion brings out its true character. | |
It is the all-sufficient sense. | |
Rather it is its one sense. | |
Mind then is free to apply to the objects. | |
It applies its pure action. | |
It need not apply its mixed action. | |
This is not an impossible faculty. | |
It is more difficult in the waking state. |
There are psychological experiments. | |
There are people who have gone far there. |
They all know this truth. | |
Page No. 63 Para No. 7 | |
We have five senses. | |
There is a sense-mind. | |
This mind can develop further senses. | |
It is its own sovereign action. | |
Our hands can learn the weight of things. | |
It can be very accurate. | |
Sense-mind can teach it. |
No other physical means is necessary. | |
Sense-mind has that capacity. | |
It uses the sense of contact as a starting point. | |
It learns of the pressure also. |
But it is not the touch that teaches the mind. | |
Mind finds out the right weight. | |
It does so by its own independent perception. | |
Touch is used to know the object. | |
That is how pure reason acts. | |
Sense-mind also acts like reason. | |
It does the same thing with sense experience. | |
It is used as a mere first starting point. | |
From there it proceeds to a knowledge. | |
That knowledge has nothing to do with sense-experience. | |
It has nothing to do with sense organs too. |
It may even contradict their evidence. | |
The extension of faculty is now a fact. | |
It is not only to outside. | |
Not only in small things this is true. | |
Manas can thus be extended to others. | |
It is true the senses relate to objects. | |
Then, this extension becomes a possibility. | |
It can be extended to others’ thoughts. | |
Feelings too can thus be known. | |
Their utterance is not needed. | |
No aid by their gesture is called for. |
No action or facial expression is necessary. | |
These are partial evidence. | |
They are misleading data. | |
Sometimes they contradict the fact. | |
We can utilise the senses inside. | |
We can recognise the sense experience. | |
Appearances and images will be enough. | |
They do not belong to our environment. | |
Nor do they belong to our organisation. | |
All these are extensions of our faculties. | |
We hesitate to receive them. |
We are incredulous. | |
It is abnormal to the physical mind. | |
It belies our ordinary life. |
It goes against our daily experience. | |
They are difficult to set in motion. | |
We cannot easily systematize them. |
They cannot become an orderly instrument. | |
Nor are they a serviceable set. | |
Still, we must admit a higher truth. | |
These enlarge our active field. | |
It is a superficial field. | |
Of course, the effort is ill-ordered. | |
It is by a casual, untaught effort we try. | |
Maybe it can be a scientific effort. | |
It may even be a well regulated practice. | |
Page No. 64 Para No. 8 | |
We have an aim in view. | |
None of them leads to our aim. | |
These truths have psychological experiences. | |
They are beyond the perception of sense. | |
But, they are seizable by the perception of reason. | |
They give us only a larger field. | |
They offer more effective means for observation. | |
There is the truth of things. | |
They always escape beyond the senses. | |
Universal life has a rule. | |
It is a sound one. | |
It is in its very constitution. | |
There may be truths attainable by reason. | |
If so, man can attain it. |
Because, in man the capacity to know will be there. |
He can arrive at it. |
He can verify them. |
He can do so by experience. | |
It is a knowledge by identity. | |
This is in our mentality. | |
By extension, we can be aware of it. |
Thus we are aware of our own existence. | |
